Gotcha; the eternal n00b, nevermind me. That said, in the States, the association of watermelons with blacks has very racist overtones. I'm certainly
not accusing anyone of this, but it's one of those things that sets off a red flag among many Americans.

Usually they ignore it (or in the case of the 18 year old Exeter keeper making his league debut, get so traumatised that he doesn't go anywhere near us - if you're wearing a kit that looks like
this, it's expected) but towards the end of last season the Dagenham and Redbridge keeper started acknowledging our friendly banter, playing up to the crowd. Net result was when he was unfortunately carried off 2 minutes from time, he got an ovation from our fans too.
There's ramming it back down people's throats, and there's handling it with dignity.
Well said. If there was any sort of racist comments, shouts, chants or threats, he should have reported it to the match officials. You want to see passion in your players, sure, but he's gotta know it was a hot situation and taunting them back was asking for some real potential trouble. Seriously, does the FA not require clubs to instruct their players on properly handling abuse from the "fans" in the stands (keep your cool, report it, etc.)?
Side note, my local club, the Harrisburg City Islanders', supporters group is actually called the Hecklers. Matches are *very* family friendly, so it's usually all done in fun (at least until the free beer runs out).
Dyno-Rod, eh? Someone feels the need to brag....
